Hello everyone,
September just seemed to fly by. We blasted off into a new school year during our welcome back assembly and the month ended with a snow day... in SEPTEMBER. Throughout the first month of school, we got to know each of our names through our rainbow name art and our syllable counting. In our Reading, we began by learning some new strategies, Strategies that can help us understand the story (ex. Predicting, Visualizing, Retell) and also strategies that help us figure out what the words are saying (ex. Stretchy Snake, Eagle Eye, Chunky Monkey). Remember to keep practicing those skills at home as well. In Writing, we began the school year by making sure we know how to print each of our letters. For the grade 1's, we started the practice of forming our letters and our grade 2's were improving their letter recognition so that when we start our writing workshop, we won't have to remember how to make the letters, it will be automatic. In Math, we started and finished a unit on patterns. We learned how to create, copy, expand and translate patterns using different manipulatives and also through sound. Next month we will start to develop and increase our number sense. In Science, we started our unit on creating colour. We learned about primary and secondary colours, shades and tints, and different ways to compare and contrast colours. Later in the unit, we will start to get more messy with different experiments such as Rainbow Milk , Shade Painting, and Does it Stick?. In Health, we started learning how to regulate our behaviour and emotions through our understanding of the Zones of Regulation. If your child is telling you that they are in the 'blue zone' or 'yellow zone', this is where it is coming from. We will continue this in the next month. We also had a chance to learn more about Blackfoot culture from Monte and Winter. The kids enjoyed touching, feeling, and sometimes smelling the different Blackfoot regalia such as a fancy shawl, pouches, and moccasins. We learned about the importance of the buffalo as well and how every part of the buffalo was used for something. On the last day, we also took part in some dancing where we found out that we were actually pretty good! We look forward to seeing what October brings to our classroom. Hopefully, less snow!
